Google Chrome Tips: #1 Keyboard Shortcuts

Google Chrome has a long list of keyboard shortcuts that help make your browsing experience more efficient and complete. The following are some of the more common shortcuts.

• Ctrl+1-8 = Pressing Ctrl and a number from 1 to 8 will move to the corresponding tab
• Ctrl+9 = Switches to the last tab open
• Ctrl+H = Displays your browser history
• Ctrl+J = Opens the “Downloads” tab
• Ctrl+K = Moves your cursor to the Omnibox (address bar)
• Ctrl+T = Opens a new tab
• Ctrl+shift+T = Undo a closed tab

Google Chrome Tips: #2 Using the Omnibox

The Omnibox or address bar in Google Chrome is much more than a location to enter a website address or search criteria. The Omnibox is capable of performing real-time mathematical calculations without pressing enter. In addition, the Omnibox can provide answers to a plethora of questions without having to press enter. Try typing, “how many cups are in a gallon” or something similar and watch the results!

Google Chrome allows users to sync their browser settings, passwords, and bookmarks across all of their devices. If you have several different devices such as work computers, home computers, portable devices, etc., this is an invaluable feature.

The autofill feature in Chrome is a truly smart feature that remembers logins, address information, etc., on a per-page basis based on your previous usage. It also maintains multiple logins for a single page. For example, we log into several hosting accounts via a single login page. Chrome gives us the option to log in with a long list of credentials representing the various accounts we are accessing.

Too often we see online forms that have tiny little input fields that make it difficult to enter more than a line or two of text. In Chrome, it is easy to drag input boxes to a larger size for easier inputting.

As each tab in Chrome operates in its own sandbox to maintain browser stability, it may be difficult to view the resources being used by Chrome. Use the Chrome Task Manager to view how much memory and CPU resources is being used by each tab. Open the Task Manager by pressing Shift+Esc.
